Challenge: Transitioning a multi-site business from legacy ISDN to cloud telephony

Background

When Unwin Jones Partnership decided to replace their legacy ISDN based PBX phone system, they needed a solution that reflected how their business operates today. As a multi-site business with offices in Carlisle and Glasgow, they required a modern phone system that would support seamless communication across locations while also giving staff the flexibility to work effectively from wherever they were based. Bytewise IT delivered a fully managed migration to a VoIP based cloud phone system built around flexibility, reliability, and ease of use.

The Challenge

UJP’s existing on-site PBX platform relied on outdated ISDN infrastructure which is currently being phased out as it no longer meets the needs of a modern business. With teams working across multiple offices as well as from customer premises and other remote locations, they needed a system that would provide a consistent and professional calling experience wherever staff were working.

The new solution needed to support:

  • Multi-site working across their Carlisle and Glasgow offices
  • Flexible working for users operating from customer premises and other locations
  • A mix of devices, including desk phones and mobile apps, to suit different working patterns
  • A professional, consistent experience aligned with the client’s brand
  • A smooth, fully managed migration with the supporting network changes handled as part of the project

Our Solution

Bytewise IT designed and implemented a cloud-based phone system tailored to the way Unwin Jones Partnership works.

Because users operate from a variety of locations, the deployment included a combination of desk phones and mobile apps, allowing staff to make and receive business calls whether they were in the Carlisle office, the Glasgow office, or visiting customer sites. This gave the business a much more flexible communications platform without compromising on usability or consistency.

To create a polished and unified experience, all devices were customised with UJP’s branding. This ensured the new system felt like a natural extension of the business and presented a professional image to users across the organisation.

Fully managed delivery

Bytewise IT managed the project from start to finish, taking responsibility for both the telephony deployment and the supporting network infrastructure configuration required for a seamless and successful rollout.

This included:

  • Configuring DHCP options and voice VLANs across the network to seamlessly handle voice traffic
  • Applying all required firewall rules for secure and reliable cloud telephony
  • Managing the migration from the legacy ISDN-based PBX to the new cloud platform
  • Ensuring the solution supported staff working across multiple sites and remote locations

By handling every stage of the project, Bytewise provided Unwin Jones Partnership with a single, experienced partner throughout the transition and helped ensure the migration was completed smoothly and efficiently.

The Outcome

Unwin Jones Partnership now benefits from a modern cloud phone system that supports the way the business works across Carlisle, Glasgow, and beyond. Staff can stay connected whether they are office-based or working remotely, using the device that best suits their role.

The result is a phone system that is:

  • Flexible, enabling users to work from anywhere
  • Scalable, supporting a multi-site business across multiple offices
  • Future-proofed, for further expansion
  • Consistent, with branded devices and a unified user experience
  • Reliable, underpinned by the right network and firewall configuration
  • Future-ready, replacing outdated ISDN infrastructure with a modern cloud solution

For Unwin Jones Partnership, the project delivered a communications platform that is better aligned with the needs of a modern professional services business. For Bytewise IT, it is a strong example of how fully managed delivery can combine cloud telephony, network expertise, and user-focused design into a single successful outcome.
